  1. The daily climate data are available from the appropriate meteorological services listed in Appendix A.

  2. The CRU gridbox data are in file "EurasianGridBox.dat" (ASCII text)

  3. The chronologies, in column format, are in the "Column.prn" file (ASCII text) These include high-pass 30-year spline chronologies (SPL) and simple RCS chronologies (RCS).

  4. The SSA chronologies, conc101 and conc51 in column format, are in file "RCS_TRW_SSA.xls" (Excel spreadsheet)

  5. The derived daily temperature data (see Table below) are in 34 files "??_season_w13_mea.dat" (ASCII text) where the prefix refers to the meteorological station used. Note that not all of these data were used in the final paper. A 13-year sliding window was used for smoothing.

  6. The combined sets of tree-ring measurement data that make up Fennoscandia, Yamal and Avam-Taymyr regional chronologies for the AD period are in files "TornFinADring.raw", "YamalADring.raw" and "TayBavRing.raw" (all ASCII text in Tucson format).

  7. Note that all the tree-ring measurements used in this paper were produced in the various tree-ring laboratories. Requests for further information about the raw data should be addressed to the appropriate authors or those institutions.

1 Start_day The number of the first day for which the 10-day cumulative temperature sum of the smoothed temperature exceeds 50°C
2 End_day The number of the first day of the last 10-day cumulative temperature sum of smoothed temperature which exceeds 50°C in the year
3 Duration The number of days for which the 10-day smoothed temperature sum exceeds 50°C (End_day - Start_day + 1)
4 Max_day Day of the maximum value of the smoothed temperature
5 Max_temp The temperature (°C) of the Max_day
6 Season_sum Temperature sum of the smoothed temperature (day degrees above 5°C) during the growing season.
7 Spring_sum Temperature sum of the smoothed temperature (day degrees above 5°C) up to the summer solstice (22nd June).
8 Warming_rate Rate of early season temperature increase from Start_day to Max_day
9 Sun_hours Cumulative sunshine hours for the growing season (calculated for Abisco station, Sweden only)
10 Sum_precip Precipitation sum during the growing season ( Start_day to End_day).
11 Degree_day The number of days in the growing season for which daily-mean temperature exceeds 5°C
12 Frost_day The number of days in the growing season for which daily-minimum temperature is less than 2°C
13 Hot_days The number of days in the growing season for which daily-maximum temperature exceeds 20°C
14 Temp_mean The average of daily-mean temperature obtained for degree days during the growing season
15 Temp_min The average of daily-minimum temperature for frost days i.e. < 2°C during the growing season.
16 Temp_max The average of daily-maximum temperature for hottest days i.e. > 20°C during the growing season
