Files containing daily Tmin, Tmax, Tmean and Precip. ---------------------------------------------------- Most of these files were extracted from the European Climate Assessment (ECA) web site - see http://www.knmi.nl/samenw/eca/htmls/index3.html. The only exceptions were the files for Amsterdam, Bern and Kvikkjokk (Sweden) which came from NMAs via a contact at Salford University. See the documentation on the web pages for source and other details of the ECA files. At the current time, there are no files available for Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Latvia, Poland, Turkey and Yugoslavia. In addition, the number for Italy is restricted. It is possible that further files will become available on the web site - in time. All files begin on 01/01/1901 and end 31/12/1999. Many stations do not have data for the whole period and, similarly, many stations do not have the full suite of variables. There is an indication in each station header-line as to the start and end of data but there is no distinction as to which variable the dates refer to. The start date is the earliest year that any of the variables begin and the end date is the latest year that any variable ends. For specific detail, it will be necessary to look at the series in question. The header lines (format details below) follow the conventions used in the CRU monthly precip. archive. The key identifier is the first (i7) field which holds the WMO code or pseudo-WMO code. Since many of the stations do not have WMO coding, there are a lot of pseudo-WMO codes. The pseudo_WMO codes used are, wherever possible, those used in other CRU series (after the comparison of station latitude, longitude, elevation and local ID numbers (wherever available). If no match has been possible, pseudo-WMO codes have been created and these relate to the nearest known WMO station identifier - but with changed end digits. The header format: ----------------- The header lines have ten fields: Field 1 ...... WMO/pseudo-WMO code (i7) Field 2 ...... Latitude (deg. decimal*10) (i5) Field 3 ...... Longitude (deg. decimal*10) (i6) Field 4 ...... Elevation (m) (i5) Field 5 ...... Station name (a20) Field 6 ...... Country (a13) Field 7 ...... Start year (i4) Field 8 ...... End year (i4) Field 9 ...... GCM grid-box (i7) Field10 ...... Local i.d. number (i9) Missing values in headers are "-9999", "-99999" etc. See file daily_hdr1.xls for header details of all series currently in the directory tree. The data format: --------------- Year, month, day, Tmin, Tmax, Tmean, Precip. (i4,1x,i2,1x,i2,1x,4(x,i5)) ......... missing values in data are "-9999" All values are deg.C*10 or mm*10 Some stations show Tmin, Tmax and Tmean, others only show Tmin and Tmax. It must NOT be assumed that, in all cases, Tmean = (Tmin+Tmax)/2. David Lister 14/02/02
